Miami, Florida (July 6, 2023)
Following the announcement of Marcello Alves being promoted as interim Assistant Coach at Miami FC earlier this week, we are excited to announce Andy Thomson as the new interim Head Coach of our USL League Two team to finish off the 2023 season!
Former Sarasota Paradise, and Miami FC Head Coach and Assistant Coach respectively joined our USL League Two side on June 24th as the team traveled to St Petersburg and returned to Miami with a 1-1 result. Andy has since slowly but surely integrated his hardworking and discipline coaching style into the team and has led the team to back to back wins vs Weston (1-0) and FC Miami City (2-0). Our USL League Two team is currently sitting at the top of the table with 20 points and two matches remaining!
The squad has transitioned well with these coaching changes and players are finding their stride towards the end of the season. The last three goals scored have came off the foot of FIU Junior Midfielder Julian Hodek. Hodek had this to say about Coach Andy joining MAC to finish off the season:
“First of all I’m very thankful for Marcello and it shows that the USL League Two is an opportunity for players and coaches to make the next step in their careers. With a very professional and experienced coach like Andy coming in I’m very happy. His coaching, analyzing but especially his way to motivate the team is phenomenal. This is especially reflected in the last two games where we had two big wins. Now everything is in our own hands to take care of business and win the conference to advance to playoffs.”
“Andy comes to Miami AC with a proven track record of winning games at a professional level (57-34-49) and in developing youth players to play professionally. As a leader he embodies our values and we look forward to having him with us.” said Miami Athletic Club president Mayowa Owolabi. “We have great confidence that Andy will keep the team focused and continue to move the club in the right direction during this transition period.”
“I am honored to take over as interim head coach for the Miami Athletic Club USL League Two team,” Thomson said. “I am committed to continuing the hard work the team has done to establish itself as a top club in USL League Two, and to meeting the high standard expected of us both on and off the field.
This week we have won against our two closest rivals, Weston and FC Miami City, while keeping zero goals against. Now as we prepare to return to play at home on Sunday we will ask for more from the players again. You can see and feel the collective group is together, all the players, all the staff, everyone is together.”
Thomson holds a UEFA A coaching license and has worked at clubs such as Miami FC, Central Coast Mariners, San Antonio FC and is currently the Director of Methodology at MLS Next club Miami Rush Soccer. His USL League Two staff remains the same with Joey Ojeda (first assistant), Vinicius Cadengue (goalkeeping coach) and Juan Ycaza (second assistant coach).
